For years, Bright Minds Foundation had the privilege of carrying a piece of Dolly Parton’s extraordinary legacy into homes across Howard County through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Through our Read With Me program, 4,278 Howard County children received nearly 100,000 free books delivered directly to their homes. But Dolly’s gift was never simply the books themselves. It was what happened because of them.
Children ran to the mailbox looking for their “book from Dolly.” Families discovered new favorite stories and created reading traditions together. Home libraries grew. And children began seeing books—and themselves—as part of a world filled with stories, ideas and possibilities.
We saw that legacy reflected in the families we served: more than 93% of families surveyed said their children had greater access to age-appropriate books at home, and nearly 86% said their children became more interested in books and reading.
Dolly understood something beautifully simple: put a book in a child’s hands, and you give them something they can carry for a lifetime.
Bright Minds Foundation is deeply proud to have helped extend that vision throughout Howard County. Dolly’s legacy lives on in the thousands of books still sitting on children’s shelves, the favorite stories read again and again, the families who made reading together a ritual, and the young readers whose imaginations are bigger because a book arrived in the mail with their name on it.
Thank you, Dolly, for giving children more than books. You gave them stories to love, moments to share and permission to dream. That legacy will keep turning pages for generations to come.
